Greetings from Damascus Christian Education Foundation! Cooler temperatures have arrived, leaves are falling and soon Christmas will be upon us. As we look to the New Year with great anticipation, we remain thankful for all the wonderful things that the Lord provided for us in 2016.
Enclosed is a brief update on some of what is happening with DCEF/DCS. We hope you enjoy a glimpse into just a few of the wonderful things happening at Damascus Christian School…
Technology Update: Through Juan Young Trust grant and your generous giving during past auctions, DCS was able to make several technological upgrades recently. Such improvements include the following: the server, firewall and switches, Wi-Fi capabilities, student technologies (25 iPads, 30 Chromebooks with cart, and new computers for the computer lab), plus new classroom furniture for students and a variety of classroom specific materials.
So far, DCS has spent over $30,000 for technology updates. DCEF hopes to submit for a new JYT grant in early 2017 for the purchase of math, science and technology projects that may include a 3D printer, CAD Program, video editing, Vernier science probes and math curriculum updates. We are requesting $10,000, with the balance to be funded through auction proceeds. If you would like to partner with DCS/DCEF for this project, just note 2017 Grant Project on your gift.
Safety Update: Over the summer, changes to our facility and policies were made to increase student safety. We have a new video/buzz-in system that will allow entrance into the building, so ALL exterior doors can remain locked during the day. Also, door locks have been re-keyed, and video cameras have been upgraded across the campus. We request that all school guests and parents use the video/buzz-in system located in the lower courtyard. We would like to express our appreciation to those who generously gave during the 2014 auction to provide these security upgrades.
Keaton Coffey Hero Half, May 2016: A number of members of the DCS and DCC community participated in this year’s Hero Half Marathon. It was a great weekend in Sweet Home with friends and family, honoring those who’ve gone before us. Through this event, $7,000 was raised for the Keaton Coffey Memorial Scholarship. We would like to say a special Thank You to Grant and Inger Coffey and the KCMS for their additional financial assistance for the 2016 DCS Washington DC trip.
DCS Auction: Our annual spring fundraiser changed its identity this year. Instead of being a classy dinner and auction for the adults, May 7th was a night for the whole family to participate in. Ten colorful teams competed in 60-second competitions as DCS culminated a month of gathering pledges with games and an auction. In total, the event was a huge success as we raised over $30,000 for curriculum, furniture and other resources to address our aging building and curriculum needs.
Veteran’s Day 2016: Damascus Christian School hosted a Veteran’s Day Celebration on November 11TH. It was so neat to see every single class of students involved in honoring our veterans! The program included patriotic songs, inspirational readings, and singing of the military song for each service branch.
